At Story Revolution we select and source children’s books from second-hand bookstores around India.
We choose books that are exceptionally warm and spirited, cherished by children all over the world, and yet often difficult to find in India. Some of these books are only available as imports in second-hand stores, where cartons of books have to be sifted through to find a few wonderful books.
Most of these books are Newbery medal or honor books, ALA (American Library Association) best or notable books, winners of the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal or other prestigious international awards. The others are hand-picked for their spirit and excellence.
Says Parveen Sikand, Librarian at The Valley School:
“Sourcing and searching for that ‘great’ book, which appeals directly to a child’s heart is a time-consuming task. We tend to hark back to our own childhoods or are easily influenced by uninformed book-store attendants. A book that can run a narrative through its course, holding the child in rapt attention, as well as enable the child to open her heart and soul in multiple directions, involves both a synergy with childhood and a command of the language, on the part of the author.
Shalini and Angela [of Story Revolution] have truly understood what this entails. They have pondered long hours over dusty bookshelves and are able to locate those ‘greats’. Their selections have greatly enhanced the range of children’s fiction on the shelves of the Valley School library.”
